Friendships with Roland Penrose, Jacques Brunius, Edouard Mesens and George Melly led to their enthusiastic engagement in the extraordinary 'Exeter Festival of Modern Art' in 1967. Lyle's acceptance and endorsement by the last lions of the original group proved inconvenient to the loudest young pretenders laying claim to a movement they thought was safely dead.
